With more than 30 years experience in the seat of a crane, I would say it all depends on the crane. The comment about newer rings true, because the newer the crane, generally the better it is equipped with load moment units and sensors that are invaluable to the operator. Size just makes an accident more expensive. I have never had an injury accident or any major damage accident, because I followed all the rules/operating instructions, plus always made sure the rigging was correct for the lift and made very sure the weight of the lift was known. If the capacity of the crane, rigging for the lift was correct, weight known, weather conditions safe and team/job site was informed ——- then the lift happened, otherwise I would not lift until everything was correct. A good operator has to be thinking far ahead of the actual lift, and anticipate any problems —— no matter the size of the crane.
