Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has acquired four new ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes for the Port of Mombasa
The new equipment replaces the old gantry cranes that were decommissioned at berth 16.
The cranes boast double-lift spreaders, capable of lifting and handling two containers simultaneously, as opposed to the single lift of the decommissioned cranes. Each crane has a rated load of 65t, an outreach of 55m, a rear reach of 13m, a track gauge of 27.45m and a lifting height of 40m above the rail and 17m below the rail.
It is claimed that the acquisition of this new equipment will double the productivity of the berth and reduce the working time of ships by almost 40%.
As part of a wider drive to modernise its equipment, KPA has also acquired, for example, new reach stackers, empty container handlers, and terminal tractors, to improve efficiency and cope with increasing freight volumes.
