Ghana and China's increasingly prosperous cooperation brings tangible benefits

The former Ghanaian Ambassador to China, Anani Okumini Demuyakol (Chinese name Diane), said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency reporters in Accra a few days ago that over the years, Ghana and China have enjoyed growing cooperation in various fields, bringing tangible benefits.

Ghana established diplomatic relations with China in 1960, and is one of the first African countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. Diane said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties more than 60 years ago, bilateral relations have been developing continuously, and cooperation in various fields has been expanding day by day, maintaining a good momentum of development. "With the growth of bilateral trade in recent years, Ghana has become one of China's major trading partners in Africa."

Diane has studied in China, can speak fluent Chinese, and has a deep relationship with China. He came to China as a diplomat for the first time in the late 1980s, worked in Ghana's embassy in China for many times since then, and served as Ghana's ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017.

Decades of diplomatic career witnessed the remarkable achievements of China since its reform and opening up, as well as the continuous development of practical cooperation between Ghana and China. He said that in Ghana's infrastructure field, the roads, bridges and ports built by Chinese enterprises have brought many conveniences to the local people.

Diane took Ashanti Province, Ghana, as an example, saying that due to poor road conditions, it often takes high time and economic costs to transport local agricultural products to cities. In March this year, the Ashanti and Western provincial branch road projects built by Chinese enterprises were completed. Farmers living in many traditional agricultural areas along the road were very happy. "The road is unblocked, and their income is expected to increase accordingly".

After years of diplomatic experience, Diane deeply felt the importance of people to people relationship in Ghana and China's cooperation, and he was pleased with the achievements of Ghana and China in the field of people to people and cultural exchanges. Dian said that Ghana now has two Confucius Institutes at the University of Ghana and the University of Hai'an Cape, and the number of foreign students going to China is also among the top African countries. "Because of this, Ghanaians have gradually deepened their understanding of China. Similarly, I have met many Chinese enterprises who have deepened their understanding of Ghana, and finally achieved success in Ghana."

Diane believes that Ghana China cooperation has great potential in the future. In recent years, China has developed rapidly in the field of information and communication. "Ghana should tap its own development potential by virtue of the technological advantages of Chinese enterprises".

After officially retiring in 2017, Diane is still actively committed to promoting cooperation between Ghana and China. As a member of Ghana China Friendship Association, Diane said: "Ghana and China should further tap the potential of cooperation, give full play to their respective advantages, and constantly push forward Ghana China cooperation."
