Associated British Ports has awarded a GBP 26M contract for four megamax ship-to-shore container cranes to Liebherr Container Cranes. The cranes will be operational in 2014 and will be able to work the largest vessels of up to 24 rows.
Liebherr stated that the securing of this contract comes on the back of a new UK ship-to-shore (STS) productivity record that was set by a Liebherr megamax STS crane at Port of Southampton. On the 17 October 2012 the Liebherr crane moved a total of 651 containers, which equates to over 54 containers an hour in a 12-hour shift.
The cranes are part of Associated British Ports' (ABP) redevelopment of container berths at the Port of Southampton. The increase in operational capacity that the new cranes will provide and the productivity that Liebherr Cranes are achieving ensures that the port is well placed to meet future market demands, Liebherr stated.
The new Liebherr cranes will have an outreach of 65m, a span of 35m and a backreach of 16m, giving a total trolley travel of 116m. The cranes have a lift height over rail of 47.5m.
"Liebherr is delighted to have been awarded this contract, which will bring the number of Liebherr STS at the Port of Southampton to ten," said Pat O'Leary, managing director of Liebherr Container Cranes. "This order reflects the confidence that ABP and DP World Southampton have in the ability of the Liebherr product to deliver their requirements in respect of performance and customer service."
